[Isamu is sitting outside the house, a cigarette in one hand. Every so often he tilts his head to the side, as though hearing a voice that only he can hear. He didn't smoke before now, and he still doesn't really care for it, but he felt a need to start today.

Usually in that case it's that the original town inhabitants have become zombies. Sometimes overnight. Like if one bites you it might turn you into a zombie too.
