• The body under the couch is starting to smell.
• Quit whining about the pain, it only makes it worse for everyone else.
• Stop smoking. Or start. Whichever you're not doing.

[Isamu is sitting outside the house, a cigarette in one hand. Every so often he tilts his head to the side, as though hearing a voice that only he can hear. He didn't smoke before now, and he still doesn't really care for it, but he felt a need to start today.

His journal lies open in his lap.]

I don't know what this place wants from me sometimes. No one does, I know.

Guess it's about that time again, huh?

[Especially given recent events.]

So is this part of the reach-out program? Are you here to pull a poor soul back on track?

I was wondering what you were doing out here. That question simply led to this.

Ah, right.

[He shrugs.]

Are you particularly bothered by my current behavior?

. . . No, I'm more bothered by the abruptness of the change.

Are you that surprised? This place changes people all the time.

Surprise and irritation don't necessarily come hand-in-hand. In any case . . . the changes are seldom permanent.

[He trains his gaze on Isamu. At this point, he's just parroting what they both already know, so he ends it there with a readjustment of his spectacles and a few words on the cigarette.]

Please be sure to put it out before heading back inside.

Yeah, I planned on it.

[He was at least that courteous, which was why he'd gone outside in the first place.]
